601 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) once heard a man saying, “labbayka ʿan Shubrumah! (Here I am, O Allah, on behalf of Shubrumah).” The Prophet asked, “Who is Shubrumah?” The man replied, “A brother of mine, or a relative of mine.” He then asked, “Have you performed ḥajj for yourself?” “No,” the man answered. The Prophet said, “Perform ḥajj for yourself first, then perform ḥajj on behalf of Shubrumah.” Recorded by Abū Dāwūd and Ibn Mājah; Ibn Ḥibbān authenticated it, though the preferred opinion with Aḥmad is that it is mawqūf ⦗1⦘.
Status of the ḥadith:
The ḥadith is sound. The author notes that Ibn Ḥibbān declared it authentic, and al-Bayhaqī said, “Its chain is sound, and nothing in this chapter is more authentic than it.” Ibn al-Mulqin judged its chain sound according to Muslim’s criteria. Al-Ṭaḥāwī, however, critiqued it as mawqūf (halted at the Companion); al-Dāraqutnī viewed it as mursal (with a missing link); al-Ẓāhirī objected on the grounds of tadlīs (concealed transmission); and Ibn al-Jawzī deemed it weak.
Nevertheless, al-Ḥāfiẓ in al-Talkhīṣ leaned toward declaring it authentic because it has corroboration in a mursal report narrated by Saʿīd b. Manṣūr, from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAṭāʾ, traced back to the Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him). In al-Talkhīṣ he also addressed several of the objections. This mursal strengthens the connected version. ʿAbd al-Ḥaqq and Ibn al-Qaṭṭān favored the view that it is marfūʿ (traced back to the Prophet), Ibn Ḥajar authenticated it as such, Ibn al-Mulqin reiterated that its chain meets Muslim’s standard, and al-Shawkānī likewise ruled it sound.
