599 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“Any child who performs the pilgrimage and then reaches the age of accountability must perform another pilgrimage; and any slave who performs the pilgrimage and is later emancipated must perform another pilgrimage.”
This was narrated by Ibn Abī Shaybah and al-Bayhaqī. All of its transmitters are trustworthy, though the scholars differed over whether it is traced back to the Prophet or halts with Ibn ʿAbbās; the view most securely preserved is that it halts with him. (1)
Degree of authenticity
The report is authentic. The author writes: “Its transmitters are reliable, and the soundest position is that it stops with Ibn ʿAbbās.” Al-Ṭaḥāwī and al-Bayhaqī also transmitted it through two separate isnāds that are sound, both as a Prophetic report and as a Companion statement, and the Prophetic version is strengthened by corroborating narrations.
Al-Talḵīṣ adds: “Supporting the correctness of attributing it to the Prophet is what Ibn Abī Shaybah related from Abū Muʿāwiyah, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ḍubyān, from Ibn ʿAbbās: ‘Commit this to memory from me, and do not say: Ibn ʿAbbās said.’ Its plain sense is that he intended the wording to be Prophetic, which is why he forbade them from attributing it to himself.”
Vocabulary
• al-ḥinth: pronounced with a kasrah on the ḥāʾ, a sukūn on the nūn, and a voiced thāʾ; it means “sin” or “offence.” In the ḥadith it signifies reaching the point at which sin is recorded—i.e., the onset of legal responsibility.
• ayyumā: ayy is a conditional noun; here it remains declinable because it is detached from any annexation, while mā is an augmentative particle. The sense is “any child …,” and so forth.
