596 – Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: “The Prophet ﷺ met a caravan at al-Rawhāʾ and asked, ‘Who are you people?’ They answered, ‘Muslims.’ They then asked, ‘And who are you?’ He replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah.’ A woman thereupon lifted up a small boy and said, ‘Is there a ḥajj for this child?’ He said, ‘Yes—and you will have the reward.’” Reported by Muslim (1).
Glossary of terms
- rakb: a party of riders, specifically those mounted on camels during travel, usually numbering ten or more; its plurals are arkub, rukūb, and rukbān.
- al-Rawhāʾ: a well on the coastal road between Mecca and Medina, about 73 km from Medina. It once hosted cafés and a rest stop; locals call it “Biʾr al-Raḥā” or “Biʾr al-Rāḥah.” Its importance has declined since the construction of the highway that bypasses it.
- ṣabiyy: a boy; its plurals are ṣibya, aṣbiya, ṣibiyyūn, and ṣibyān. The original wāw was changed to yāʾ because of the preceding kasrah. Linguistically it denotes a male from birth until puberty. Some lexicographers restrict its customary use to a boy approaching puberty, while strictly speaking it ranges from birth until weaning.
- ḥajj: in this sentence the word functions as a postponed subject, while “for this one” is a fronted predicate—i.e., “Will this child receive the reward of ḥajj?” She did not ask, “Is ḥajj obligatory for him?” because pilgrimage is not obligatory for minors.
