As for the majority of scholars, their proof is the hadith under discussion and the report collected by al-Tirmidhi (738) and others from Ibn Masʿūd, traced back to the Prophet: “Alternate between hajj and ʿumrah, for alternating between them wipes away sins and poverty just as a blacksmith’s bellows removes the dross from iron,” together with other narrations. ʿĀʾishah performed two ʿumrahs in a single month—during her Farewell Pilgrimage with the Prophet ﷺ.
The meticulous scholars, however, intend by “ʿumrah” the pilgrimage a person undertakes from his own homeland, not the practice of leaving Mecca to the nearest point outside the sanctuary merely in order to return and perform another ʿumrah.
Ibn al-Qayyim said in Zād al-Maʿād: “Throughout his entire life the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not perform a single ʿumrah that originated outside Mecca, as many people do today; all of his ʿumrahs were performed while he was entering the city. After the revelation he remained in Mecca for thirteen years, and during that whole period there is no report that he ever entered into ihrām outside Mecca. The ʿumrah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ performed and legislated is therefore the ʿumrah of one arriving at Mecca, not the ʿumrah of someone already there who goes out to the area outside the sanctuary (ḥill) and then comes back to perform it. No one ever did this during his time except ʿĀʾishah alone. She had entered ihrām for ʿumrah but then menstruated, so he instructed her to incorporate hajj into her ʿumrah, making her a qārinah. She later felt distressed that her companions would return with both hajj and a separate ʿumrah while she would return with an ʿumrah subsumed within her hajj. He therefore ordered her brother to take her to Tanʿīm so she could perform an independent ʿumrah from there.”
Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bāz—may Allah have mercy on him—said: “What some people do by performing numerous ʿumrahs after hajj, whether from Tanʿīm, Jiʿirānah, or elsewhere, even though they already performed an ʿumrah before hajj, is unsupported by any evidence; rather, the proofs show that it is better to leave it. The Prophet ﷺ and his Companions did not perform ʿumrah after completing hajj. He only enabled ʿĀʾishah to perform ʿumrah from Tanʿīm because she had been unable to perform ʿumrah with the others upon entering Mecca due to menstruation. She asked the Prophet ﷺ to allow her to perform an ʿumrah in place of the one for which she had entered ihrām at the miqāt, and he granted her request, so she ended up with two ʿumrahs. Whoever is in a comparable…"
