Lessons derived from the ḥadith:
- The excellence of ʿumrah and the fact that, like other acts of worship, it expiates sins. The Almighty says: “Indeed, good deeds erase bad deeds” (Quran 11:114). The scholars, however, restrict this expiation to minor sins, not major ones. Al-Nawawī said: “According to the doctrine of Ahl al-Sunnah, major sins are only removed by repentance or by Allah’s mercy and favor.” Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr likewise stated: “What is meant is the expiation of minor sins, not major ones.”
- The ḥadith clearly indicates the merit of performing ʿumrah frequently; this will be discussed in detail later, Allah willing.
- ʿUmrah has no fixed season; anyone not already engaged in hajj may perform it at any time of the year. This is a matter of scholarly consensus.
- Hajj is superior to ʿumrah because of its greater significance, the multiplicity of its rites, and its status as one of the pillars of Islam.
- Al-Nawawī said: “The soundest and most famous view is that al-ḥajj al-mabrūr is the hajj untainted by sin, the term mabrūr being derived from al-birr, meaning obedience.”
- Paradise is the ultimate aspiration and the magnificent reward for righteous deeds, and among its greatest delights is gazing upon the Face of the Lord, glorified and exalted be He.
- The ḥadith urges believers to perform hajj free of sin and in the prescribed manner in order to obtain this immense reward.
Scholarly disagreement:
The majority of scholars hold that it is recommended to perform ʿumrah repeatedly within a single year, whereas the Mālikī school considers it disliked to perform more than one ʿumrah in a year. Their evidence is that the Prophet ﷺ only performed it from one year to the next.
* خلاف العلماء:
