or the pursuit of honorific titles, or out of ostentation or the desire for fame, for such motives nullify the deed and bar it from acceptance.
Its Wisdom and Inner Purposes:
The pilgrimage carries momentous wisdom, lofty secrets, and noble aims that join together the good of this life and the next. The noble verse points to this: “so that they may witness benefits for themselves” (al-Hajj 22:28).
It is a vast, thronging assembly that gathers delegations of Muslims from every land at one time and in one place. Therein lie bonding, acquaintance, and mutual understanding, so that the Muslims become a single community, standing in one rank, reaping benefits for both their religious and worldly affairs.
The pilgrimage also abounds in social, cultural, and political advantages too numerous to count. It is a magnificent act of worship to Allah Most High, marked by humility, submission, and reverence, by offering one’s soul and precious wealth, braving journeys and dangers, and parting from family and homeland—all in obedience to Allah, yearning for Him, loving Him, and seeking closeness to Him by heading toward the honored Kaʿbah and the sacred precincts.
For this reason the hadith recorded by al-Bukhari (1650) and Muslim (2403) states: “An accepted pilgrimage has no reward but Paradise.” This applies when the servant undertakes the pilgrimage solely for the Face of Allah, hoping for reward from Him, carefully follows the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ in his pilgrimage and all his actions, avoids whatever diminishes the pilgrimage—such as indecent speech, disobedience, and contentious disputation—and purifies his creed of innovations, superstitions, and tendencies contrary to Islam. Allah is the One who grants success and whose help is sought.
