588 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) related that “some men from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ were shown in their dreams that the Night of Decree falls within the last seven nights. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘I see that your dreams have concurred on the last seven nights, so whoever is seeking it should look for it during the last seven nights.’” Agreed upon. (1)
Glossary of hadith vocabulary
• Urū: originally “uriyū,” from ruʾyā (vision); that is, it was made to appear to them in a dream.
• The Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr): so called—whether the dāl is read with a fatḥah or left quiescent—because of its immense rank and honor, or because all affairs of lifespans, provisions, and the events of the coming year are decreed therein, as Allah the Exalted says, “On that night every matter of wisdom is made distinct.” [Al-Dukhan 44:4]
• Ruʾyākum (your dreams): the noun ruʾyā follows the pattern fuʿlā, like ḥublā; one says “he saw a ruʾyā” without tanwīn, and its plural is ruʾan with tanwīn. Here it means a dream vision.
• Tawāṭaʾat (have concurred): written with tāʾ, wāw, ṭāʾ, alif–hamzah, then tāʾ. Allah says, “to agree with the number Allah has made sacred” [Al-Tawbah 9:37]. Its root sense is that a man places his foot where another has stepped; by extension it means that one person’s dream accords with another’s, i.e., they coincide in wording and meaning.
• Fal-yataḥarrāhā (let him seek it): taḥarrī denotes purposeful, diligent pursuit, with determination to single something out in word and deed.
