Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

584 – ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: “Whenever the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, intended to observe iʿtikāf, he would perform the Fajr prayer and then enter his place of retreat.” Agreed upon. (1)

Vocabulary of the ḥadith
• muʿtakafahu: a locative noun; that is, the place where he stayed in seclusion.

Points derived from the ḥadith

  1. The narration establishes the legitimacy and recommended nature of iʿtikāf; it is among the Prophet’s practices and Sunnah.
  2. The time for the person observing iʿtikāf to enter his designated area is after the dawn (Ṣubḥ) prayer.
  3. It also shows that there is no objection to setting aside a spot for iʿtikāf with a tent, matting, a small enclosure, or the like. Al-Bukhārī and Muslim relate from ʿĀʾishah that “when the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, planned to observe iʿtikāf he ordered that his tent be pitched, and it was pitched.” Such a reserved space is permissible provided it does not encroach upon the area needed by the worshippers.
