al-Bukhārī (6203) and Muslim (3128) likewise record that ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “Messenger of Allah, during the time of ignorance I vowed to spend a night in retreat in the Sacred Mosque.” He replied, “Fulfil your vow.” Night, however, is not a period for fasting.
