Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

– yasil: from sāla, saylan and saylānan – it means “to run” or “to flow.”
– katif: pronounced with a fatḥa on the kāf and a kasra on the tā, ending in fāʾ; a broad bone situated behind the shoulder (mankib) in both humans and animals. It is grammatically feminine and its plural is aktāf.

Points derived from the ḥadith

  1. The saliva of a camel is pure and not impure; this is the unanimous view of the Muslims. The Prophet ﷺ saw the saliva running onto ʿAmr ibn Khārijah yet did not tell him to wash it. His silent approval is Sunnah. Even supposing the Prophet ﷺ did not notice it, Allah surely did, and had the substance been impure, Allah would not have allowed it. That approval, therefore, proves its purity.
  2. According to the sounder opinion, the camel’s urine and dung share the same ruling as its saliva: they are pure, as indicated by the ḥadith of the ʿUrayni people and other reports.
  3. The same ruling applies to all livestock and to every animal whose flesh is lawful to eat while it is alive, as indicated by specific texts and the common underlying reason that links them with camels.
  4. It is permissible to deliver a sermon or admonition while mounted.
  5. It is recommended to give sermons and admonitions from an elevated place, for that is more effective in reaching the audience and aiding their understanding, thereby achieving the intended purpose.
  6. It is recommended that on the second day of the Days of Tashrīq—in Minā—the ruler of the Muslims, or his deputy, deliver a sermon to teach the people the remaining rulings of the pilgrimage and the farewell circumambulation, for the Prophet ﷺ gave this sermon on that very day.
  7. It is permissible for the preacher to appoint someone standing below him to help convey the sermon, direct the people, quieten them, or organise them; this is not considered arrogance or haughtiness so long as the heart remains humble.
