- The removal of a large quantity of blood through cupping, phlebotomy, or blood-drawing.
- The onset of menstrual or post-partum bleeding.
- Injecting blood into the body (blood transfusion).
- Deliberately inducing vomit.
Second: Matters that do not nullify the fast
- Eating, drinking, intercourse, or any other nullifier committed out of forgetfulness.
- Kohl, nose- or ear-drops, and medications applied to wounds anywhere on the body.
- Injections intended merely to deliver medicine to the body, whether intramuscular or intravenous.
- The involuntary emission of semen or pre-seminal fluid.
- Inhaled asthma medication.
And things of this sort: the jurists have disagreed about them, yet the stronger view is that they do not break the fast. Shaykh al-Islām (Ibn Taymiyyah) reduced all nullifiers to two categories:
- Substances that benefit, nourish, and strengthen the body, such as food, drink, and whatever substitutes for them;
- Substances whose departure from the body causes weakness and exhaustion. These have been prohibited out of mercy for the fasting person, lest the rigour of fasting combine with what further enfeebles the body—such as intercourse and cupping.
