a general resolve to fast is sufficient.
The Shaykh said: Regarding the requirement to specify Ramaḍān in one’s intention, three opinions exist within Imām Aḥmad’s school:
- The fast is not valid unless he explicitly intends Ramaḍān; this is the view of al-Shāfiʿī.
- It is valid even without that specification; this is the view of Abū Ḥanīfah.
- It is valid with a wholly unrestricted intention.
The matter is best understood by the rule that intention follows knowledge: if a person knows that tomorrow is a day of Ramaḍān, specification becomes obligatory; if he does not know, specification is not required.
