Benefit:
Women are permitted to wear gold and silver jewellery in whatever quantity is customary for them, no matter how much it may be. A man, however, is allowed only a silver ring, never a gold one. It is also lawful to adorn weapons and other instruments of war with the amount of decoration customarily accepted, and the same concession applies to genuine needs such as dental wiring, a prosthetic nose, and similar medical fittings.
Anything beyond what the revealed texts expressly permit is forbidden. Hence it is impermissible for males, whether young or old, to wear gold or silver, to fashion them into chains or watches, buttons or cufflinks, pens or keys, or any article of clothing; to use them for eating or drinking or any other purpose; or to keep gold- or silver-plated vessels as ornaments or for anything else.
The practice in luxury hotels and upscale restaurants of using silver items for dining—turning them into plates, spoons, forks, and the like—is unquestionably prohibited and runs counter to the prophetic texts that ban it.
Those in authority, and all who are able, must denounce this practice and prevent it.
