537 – Abu Rafiʿ reported: “The Prophet ﷺ appointed a man from the Banu Makhzum to collect the zakat. That man said to me, ‘Accompany me, for you will receive a share of it.’ I replied, ‘Not until I go to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and ask him.’ So I went to him and asked, and he said, ‘The client of a people is counted as one of them, and charity is not lawful for us.’ ” Related by Ahmad, the Three (Abu Dawud, al-Nasaʾi, and al-Tirmidhi), Ibn Khuzaymah, and Ibn Hibban (1).
