536 – Jubayr b. Muṭʿim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān and I walked to the Prophet ﷺ and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, you have given the Banū al-Muṭṭalib a share from the khums of Khaybar but left us out, even though we and they stand on the same footing.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, ‘The Banū al-Muṭṭalib and the Banū Hāshim are but one and the same.’” Recorded by al-Bukhārī (1).
Vocabulary of the ḥadith
• “One and the same”: written with an emphatic shīn and ending in a hamza. Al-Khaṭṭābī noted that some transmit it as “sīʾ” (with a kasrah on the sīn and a doubled yāʾ), meaning “equal.” He considered that reading richer in meaning, but ʿIyāḍ held that the commonly transmitted wording is the correct one.
• “From the khums of Khaybar”: the khums, with both vowels ḍamma, is the one-fifth taken from the spoils before distribution; it is the share allocated to Allah, His Messenger, the Prophet’s relatives, the orphans, the poor, and the wayfarer.
• “On the same footing”: i.e., in kinship, for all of them descend from ʿAbd Manāf. ʿUthmān belonged to the Banū ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf, while Jubayr belonged to the Banū Nawfal b. ʿAbd Manāf; both were brothers of Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf.
• “The Banū al-Muṭṭalib and the Banū Hāshim are but one”: meaning in mutual support, and for that reason they were granted this distinction.
Points derived from the ḥadith
- ʿAbd Manāf b. Quṣayy is the Prophet’s fourth forefather. He had four sons—Hāshim, al-Muṭṭalib, ʿAbd Shams, and Nawfal—who, in terms of lineage, all share the same degree of relation to the Prophet ﷺ. This explains why ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, a descendant of ʿAbd Shams, came forward.
