522 – Abu Saʿīd al-Khudrī (Allah be pleased with him) related that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whichever Muslim clothes a Muslim who has no garment, Allah will clothe him with the green garments of Paradise; whichever Muslim feeds a hungry Muslim, Allah will feed him with the fruits of Paradise; and whichever Muslim gives water to a thirsty Muslim, Allah will let him drink from the sealed nectar.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd, and its chain contains some weakness (1).
Hadith grading
The hadith is sound.
Its chain includes Yazīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū Khālid ad-Dalānī. Al-Mundhirī said: several scholars praised him, while several others criticized him. As mentioned earlier, Ibn Ḥajar remarked that the chain has some weakness, whereas al-Suyūṭī graded it sound in al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr. Al-Mundhirī also said in al-Targhīb wa’l-Tarhīb (2/66): “It is also reported as a mawqūf narration from Abu Saʿīd, and that version is more authentic and more fitting.” However, this mawqūf report is of the sort that does not allow for personal opinion. Al-Nawawī said: its chain is good, and al-Mundhirī declared it sound.
Vocabulary of the hadith
• ayyamā (whichever): ay is an indefinite noun that carries a conditional meaning. It is declinable because it is habitually annexed to a singular noun, as in “ayyu imriʾin ….” At times the annexed noun is omitted and nunation is inserted in its place, as in “ayyan mā tadʿū” (“whichever [name] you invoke,” 17:110); occasionally the additional particle mā is attached to it.
