517 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ made the zakat al-Fitr obligatory: one sāʿ (about 2.5–3 kg) of dates or one sāʿ of barley, upon every slave and free person, male and female, young and old among the Muslims, and he ordered that it be given before the people go out for the prayer.” Agreed upon. (1)
Ibn ʿAdī and al-Dāraquṭnī record—through a weak chain—the additional wording: “Make them self-sufficient so they will not have to go around seeking help on this day.” (2)
— Hadith grading:
The extra wording is weak.
The author states: Ibn ʿAdī and al-Dāraquṭnī transmit, with a weak chain, the addition: “Make them self-sufficient so they will not have to go around seeking help on this day.”
That chain includes Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar al-Wāqidī.
It is also reported through Najīḥ al-Sindī, nicknamed Abū Maʿshar.
Ibn al-Mulqin and al-Ḥāfiẓ declared him weak; Ibn al-Madīnī and al-Nasāʾī likewise deemed him weak, and al-Bukhārī said: “His hadith is munkar.”
— Vocabulary of the hadith:
• faraḍa: can bear two senses—the more apparent is “he made it obligatory,” and the other is “he fixed (its amount).”
