The Council also resolves—by a majority opinion—that it is permissible to pay the cash equivalent of zakat when removing it from the assets themselves would place undue hardship on the owner and would not harm the beneficiaries. An example is someone whose zakat on his camels is to be paid in sheep, yet he owns no sheep and obtaining one would be burdensome. The same applies whenever the welfare of the poor calls for receiving the monetary value—such as when taking the goods themselves would be difficult because they are in a location that makes transport onerous. Likewise, if a farmer has sold all of his crop, he may discharge the zakat from the sale proceeds. Allah alone grants success. May blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
