498 – ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “When you possess two hundred dirhams and a full year has elapsed over them, five dirhams are due. Nothing is required of you until you have twenty dinars and a year has passed over them; then half a dinar is due. Whatever exceeds that is assessed in proportion. No zakah is taken from any wealth until a complete year has passed over it.” Reported by Abū Dāwūd; it is graded ḥasan, though there is a difference of opinion regarding whether it is marfūʿ. (1)
Hadith grading:
This hadith is ḥasan. It was narrated by Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah (1790), Aḥmad (1200), and al-Bayhaqī (7325) on the authority of ʿAlī. Al-Dāraqutnī authenticated the mawqūf version (2/91), yet Ibn Ḥajar said: “The isnād of ʿAlī’s report is acceptable, and the supporting reports strengthen it, so it is valid as proof.” He declared it ḥasan in Fatḥ al-Bārī. Al-Bukhārī graded it ṣaḥīḥ, while al-Nawawī said it is “ṣaḥīḥ or ḥasan,” and al-Zaylaʿī reinforced it in Naṣb al-Rāyah. Al-Tirmidhī related: “I asked al-Bukhārī about this hadith and he said: Both of its chains are sound.”
