Grade of the hadith
The hadith is sound–fair (ḥasan). It was transmitted by Ahmad and Abu Dawud through the chain of ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather, a chain about which some criticism has been raised.
• Al-Ajurri said: I asked Abu Dawud, “Is ʿAmr, in your view, a decisive proof (ḥujjah)?” He replied, “No, not even half a proof.”
• Ibn Maʿin observed: “When ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb narrates from his father from his grandfather, he is reading from a book; that is the source of his weakness.”
• Abu Zurʿah remarked: “The criticism concerns a book he possessed; scarcely do we encounter anything objectionable from him that is not through his father from his grandfather.”
• Imam Ahmad said: “Hadith scholars, when they wish, adduce the narrations of ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather as evidence, and when they wish, they set them aside.”
• Al-Bukhari stated: “I saw Ahmad ibn Hanbal, ʿAli ibn al-Madini, Ishaq ibn Rahuyah, Abu ʿUbayd, and the great majority of our teachers relying on the hadith of ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb from his father from his grandfather.”
