Ṭālib; and if he were killed, then ʿAbdullāh ibn Rawāḥah. All three commanders were martyred, for the Muslim army numbered only three thousand while the Byzantine host was estimated at one hundred thousand. News of their fate reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the heavens, so he went to Jaʿfar’s house, offered them consolation, and supplicated for his children. He then turned to those present and said, “Prepare food for the family of Jaʿfar, for something has befallen them that is keeping them occupied.”
2 – From this incident a prophetic sunnah was established: food is to be sent to the bereaved family by their relatives, neighbors, friends, and the like. There is no doubt that this is one of the beauties of Islam. It fosters social solidarity and gives practical expression to the hadith, “A believer to another believer is like a building, each part supporting the other” (al-Bukhari 2446).
3 – It is stated in Sharḥ al-Zād: “It is recommended to prepare food for the family of the deceased and have it sent to them for three days, in light of the story of Jaʿfar.”
The compiler—may Allah pardon him—comments: The hadith itself does not specify a duration; it appears that the food was sent only once. Nevertheless, the jurists took into account that condolences customarily last three days. Since the basic ruling of providing food is legislated, the matter is broad in scope.
4 – As for the practice that has now become common—namely, that the family of the deceased themselves prepare food and feed the people—this is a reprehensible innovation for several reasons:
First: It contravenes the sunnah, and whatever opposes the sunnah is an innovation.
Second: It resembles the pre-Islamic customs of slaughtering animals when the leaders of their tribes died.
Third: It entails unlawful expenditure and thus falls under extravagance.
Fourth: Spending inherited wealth on this may wrong the weak and the minors among the heirs.
Fifth: The family of the deceased are preoccupied by their calamity; preparing food and inviting people to it only adds to their burden.
