included in the ruling; however, if she is unable to change the wrongdoing, she must not remain in the company of the women who are wailing.
Shaykh al-Islām said: Patience is unanimously obligatory.
6 – The shaykh also stated: The reward related to calamities is for the patience shown during them, not for the calamity itself, for the calamity is not something man has earned.
Legally speaking, ṣabr (patience) is to restrain the soul from panic, the tongue from complaining, and the limbs from slapping the cheeks, tearing the garment, and the like. It is a noble trait that testifies to the servant’s righteousness and firmness in his religion. Allah, the Exalted, says: “Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure.” (al-Zumar 39:10)
Praise of patience and of those who embody it appears in more than eighty places in the Noble Quran.
7 – Hadith 485 indicates that the deceased is tormented because of the wailing performed over him, even though he did not commit that act himself. This led scholars to question how the deceased can be tormented for the lamentation of others when Allah, Most High, says: “No soul bears the burden of another.” (Fāṭir 35:18)
The best explanation is that of Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, who said: The correct view is that the deceased is distressed by the weeping over him, as the authentic hadiths state—for example, “The deceased is tormented by his family’s weeping over him,” and in another wording, “Whoever is lamented over will be tormented because of that lamentation.” The Lawgiver did not say “punished” but “tormented,” and torment (ʿadhāb) is broader than punishment, for it merely signifies pain, and not everyone who suffers pain because of some cause is thereby being punished. Nevertheless, a person should instruct his family not to wail for him if wailing is their custom, for if he expects them to do so and fails to forbid it while able, he is deemed to have approved of it, thus resembling one who neglects to forbid an evil while possessing the ability to remove it.
