Hadith grading
The hadith is ḥasan (good).
In his Talkhīṣ, Ibn Ḥajar states that it was narrated by al-Bazzār and al-Dāraqutnī from ʿĀmir ibn Rabīʿah. Al-Bayhaqī said it has a corroborating report transmitted mursal by Jaʿfar from his father. Al-Shāfiʿī related it through Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad from Jaʿfar, and Abū Dāwūd cited it in al-Marāsīl via the route of Abū al-Mundhir. Abū Ḥātim judged Abū al-Mundhir to be unknown. Ibn Ḥajar said its chain appears sound, and it was declared authentic by Ibn Abī Dāwūd, al-Shawkānī, and Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān.
Vocabulary

Points derived from the hadith
- Performing the funeral prayer over the deceased is a communal obligation (farḍ kifāyah); once a sufficient number have fulfilled it, the duty is lifted from the rest.
- It is prescribed to accompany the funeral from the prayer until burial. Whoever does so with faith and seeking reward earns two qīrāṭs of recompense—each qīrāṭ as great as a mighty mountain.
