the drying up of the rivers, the waves casting it onto the shore, or a sudden heavenly calamity.
The upshot is that whenever a dead fish is found—no matter what caused its death—it remains lawful and pure.
As for one that dies because the sea has been polluted with toxic chemicals or lethal waste, it is forbidden— not by virtue of the fish itself but because of the harmful or deadly substances that have poisoned it.
- The ḥadīth also proves that when fish or locusts die in water, the water does not become impure, whether its quantity is small or large. Even if its taste, color, or smell changes, the change is not caused by filth but by something pure. This is why the tradition is cited in the chapter on water.
