and then he himself sat down and instructed us to sit.

Imam Aḥmad said, “If someone chooses to stand, I see no fault in it; and if he sits, there is no harm.”

Al-Nawawī said, “The preferred view regarding standing for a funeral is that it is recommended.”

Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn likewise regarded standing as recommended.
