465 – ʿAwf ibn Mālik, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ offered the funeral prayer, and I memorised part of his supplication: ‘O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, grant him well-being and pardon him. Honour the hospitality prepared for him, make his entrance spacious, wash him with water, snow and hail, and purify him from sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. Replace his home with a better home, his family with a better family, admit him into Paradise, and protect him from the trial of the grave and from the torment of the Fire.’” Narrated by Muslim (1).
Vocabulary of the ḥadīth
• Allāhumma: originally “yā Allāh” (“O Allah”); the final mīm substitutes for the vocative particle, so the two are never combined.
• “Forgive him”: maghfirah is to veil the sin and overlook it.
• “Have mercy on him”: raḥmah is more comprehensive than maghfirah, for it includes the attainment of what is sought after the removal of harm.
• “Grant him well-being”: protect him from sins, from the punishment of the grave, and from the punishment of the Fire.
• “Pardon him”: overlook the forbidden acts he committed and the obligatory acts he neglected.
• “Honour his hospitality”: nuzul is what is presented to a guest; i.e., make the hospitality he receives from You generous.
• “Make his entrance spacious”: widen his grave for him, open for him a gate to Paradise, and likewise expand his abodes with You in Paradise after the Resurrection.
• “Wash him with water, snow and hail”: these cool substances counteract the heat of his sins, extinguish their blaze and cool them.
