Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

or in parts of the remembrance during the prayer, so that those praying behind him may learn the ruling. Ibn ʿAbbās, for instance, recited the Fātiḥah aloud to let the people know that its recitation in the funeral prayer is a sunnah—that is, the practice of the Prophet ﷺ. Such a practice may at times be merely recommended, at other times obligatory; in this case, other proofs show that it is in fact obligatory.

Scholarly disagreement
In the Sunan of al-Nasāʾī and elsewhere, Abū Umāmah relates: “The sunnah in the funeral prayer is to recite Umm al-Qurʾān (the Fātiḥah) softly after the first takbīrah.”
Mujāhid said, “I asked eighteen of the Prophet’s Companions about recitation in the funeral prayer, and every one of them answered: ‘One recites.’ ”
Other supporting reports indicate that al-Fātiḥah must be recited after the first takbīrah—the takbīrah of entering the prayer—and after the taʿawwudh and the basmalah.
As for the taʿawwudh and basmalah, there is consensus that they are to be uttered. Concerning the opening supplication (istiftāḥ), the majority hold that it is not said, and that no surah is read after the Fātiḥah. This is the position of the two Imams al-Shāfiʿī and Aḥmad, and of the great majority of scholars, early and late.
Al-Ṣanʿānī says in Badar al-Tamām: “The hadith proves that reciting al-Fātiḥah in the funeral prayer is obligatory, because the term ‘sunnah’ here means the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, not something opposed to a compulsory act; that latter sense is merely conventional usage.”
Imams Abū Ḥanīfah and Mālik, however, consider it a sunnah rather than an obligation. According to the Ḥanafīs one recites the opening praise (duʿāʾ al-thanāʾ); reciting al-Fātiḥah is permissible but not required. This is also one of the two views transmitted from Imām Aḥmad and was preferred by Shaykh al-Islām. Ibn al-Qayyim reports in Zād al-Hādī: “Our shaykh (Ibn Taymiyyah) said, ‘Reciting the Fātiḥah in the funeral prayer is not obligatory; it is a sunnah.’ ”
The first view is the more prudent, for its proofs are stronger.
