438 – Maʿqil ibn Yasār (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Recite Sūrah Yā Sīn over your dying.” It was related by Abū Dāwūd and al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Ḥibbān declared it authentic. (1)
Degree of authenticity
The ḥadith is weak.
It was transmitted by Aḥmad (19790), Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Abī Shaybah (2/445), Ibn Mājah (1448), al-Ḥākim (1/753), al-Bayhaqī (3/383), and al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī.
Al-Ḥākim said: “Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd and others halted it (i.e., reported it as a Companion’s statement).”
Al-Nawawī wrote in al-Adhkār: “Its chain is weak; it contains two unknown narrators,” although Abū Dāwūd did not label it weak. Ibn Ḥajar noted that Ibn al-Qaṭṭān criticized it for inconsistency, for being halted, and because the status of Abū ʿUthmān and his father—both mentioned in the chain—is unknown.
Al-Dāraquṭnī commented: “This ḥadith has a weak chain and an unknown text; no sound report exists on the subject.”
Points derived from the ḥadith
Some scholars judged it authentic, while others deemed it weak, and its meaning admits two interpretations:
First possibility: that the surah is to be recited in the presence of a person who is dying. Such a person is called “dead” in anticipation of what is coming, as Allah says, “Indeed, you will die, and indeed, they will die.” (39:30) Therefore, it is recommended to recite it beside one who is in the throes of death.
