Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

in which He says: “Do not kill yourselves. Allah is ever merciful toward you. And whoever does that in transgression and injustice—We shall surely cast him into a Fire, and that is easy for Allah” (Quran 4:29–30).

Al-Bukhari 6105 and Muslim 110 transmit from Thābit ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever kills himself with anything will be punished with it on the Day of Resurrection.”

In Sahih al-Bukhari 3074 it is related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, speaking about a man who was overcome by his wounds and killed himself, declared: “He is one of the people of Hellfire.”

Second: Whoever takes his own life is no true believer, for the believer, when prosperity comes, is grateful, and when adversity strikes, is patient.

Third: Suicide betrays cowardice, passivity, and an unwillingness to endure, confront, and overcome life’s challenges.

Fourth: It also reveals a feeble mind and a weak faith. The person seeks relief through death, yet by killing himself he passes from psychological anguish to a torment far greater than anything suffered in this life—like one who, fleeing the heat of the desert, jumps into the fire. We ask Allah for well-being.

Ustādh Aḥad ʿAssāf writes in his book The Lawful and the Unlawful: “In short, suicide is a collapse of will, a blow to resolve, and a deficiency of faith; therefore, the doer’s recompense is Hellfire.”

Accordingly, the believer must endure every trial, no matter how severe, for “with hardship comes ease,” every hardship has its relief, and the punishment of this world is lighter than the punishment of the Hereafter.

Fifth: The Prophet ﷺ pointed out the very reason why wishing for death is forbidden—namely, that death cuts off good deeds, whereas life allows one’s rewards to grow through further deeds. Even the mere continuation of faith is itself the greatest of deeds. Thus al-Bukhari narrates from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet ﷺ said: “None of you should long for death: if he is righteous, perhaps he will increase in good; and if he is sinful, perhaps he will be given time to seek Allah’s pardon.”
