by unanimous consensus. Allah, the Exalted, says: “We have already seized them with punishment, yet they did not humble themselves before their Lord, nor do they beseech Him” (Quran 23:76).

Ibn Kathīr comments: “We tested them with calamities and hardships.”

Allah also says: “Why then, when Our punishment came upon them, did they not humble themselves? But their hearts became hardened” (Quran 6:43).

Whoever brings his complaint to people while remaining content with Allah’s decree is not guilty of panic, and it is permissible for him to do so. The Prophet ﷺ said, “I find myself weighed down with grief,” and he said, “Oh, my head!” and he said, “I suffer fever twice as intensely as any two of you.” Statements of this sort show that voicing what one is experiencing when calamity strikes is permitted. Yet if the affliction can be kept hidden, concealing it is one of the private acts done solely for Allah Almighty.

7 – Al-Bukhārī 6507 and Muslim 2683 record: “Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him; and whoever dislikes to meet Allah, Allah dislikes to meet him.”

Imām Aḥmad said: A servant’s fear and hope should be equal; whichever of the two gains the upper hand will destroy him.

The shaykh commented: This is true balance. If fear prevails, it may drive a person to despair; if hope prevails, it may leave him feeling secure from Allah’s devising. Hope should arise from magnifying Allah’s mercy, whereas fear should arise from reflecting on one’s own negligence.

8 – In these modern times a new phenomenon has appeared: suicide—when a person takes his own life after a calamity befalls him: straitened means, a worldly ambition missed, a grievous trial, or a lingering illness. Panic overwhelms him, sound judgment deserts him, and he kills himself by drowning, burning, leaping from a height, throwing himself before a train, or in some other manner. The harms of this abhorrent practice are extremely grave: it contradicts the Revealed Law and violates innate human nature. Among its dangers are the following:

First: It runs counter to the Sharia of Allah, exalted be He, in the clearest of His texts. Allah says
