434 – Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Make frequent mention of the destroyer of pleasures – death.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhī and al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Ḥibbān declared it sound.⦗1⦘
Grade of the ḥadīth
The ḥadīth is ṣaḥīḥ (sound). It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī, al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah (4258), Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim (4/357), and al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī (5/76). Al-Ḥākim said, “It is sound according to the criteria of Muslim,” and al-Dhahabī agreed. It was also judged sound by Ibn Ḥibbān, Ibn al-Sakan, and Ibn Ṭāhir, whereas al-Dāraquṭnī considered it mursal (missing the Companion). The report is further supported by numerous corroborating narrations, among them:
1 – The ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar; its narrators are trustworthy except for al-Qāsim. Ibn Abī Ḥātim cited it without passing either criticism or endorsement on him.
2 – The ḥadīth of Anas, traced back to the Prophet; recorded by Abū Nuʿaym, al-Khaṭīb, and al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī. Its chain is sound according to Muslim’s conditions.
3 – The ḥadīth of ʿUmar, likewise traced back; recorded by Abū Nuʿaym. Its transmitters are reliable except for ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Yazīd; al-Dhahabī said, “No one knows who he is.”
Vocabulary
• hādhim: in the genitive because it is part of a construct phrase. Read with a dotted dhāl (ذ) it means “the severer of pleasures”; read with an undotted dāl (د) it means “the remover of pleasures.” The two senses are close.
• al-mawt (death): the word may be parsed as nominative, accusative, or genitive.
