Hadith grading
This narration is ṣaḥīḥ (sound). Al-Bukhārī cites it in suspended form (taʿlīq). Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ notes in his ʿUlūm al-Ḥadīth that a taʿlīq in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī technically severs the chain, so it outwardly looks disconnected, yet its status is not that of a weak report; whatever al-Bukhārī includes in this manner belongs to the category of the sound ḥadīths, not the weak. Thus the report of Abū ʿĀmir al-Ashʿarī—“Certain people in my ummah will deem fornication and silk lawful”—is authentic, and its continuous chain is known according to the criteria of soundness. Al-Bukhārī sometimes adopts this form for reasons other than any flaw stemming from a broken isnād.
Accordingly, al-Bukhārī has authenticated the ḥadīth by placing it unreservedly in his Ṣaḥīḥ. It was also judged sound by Ibn al-Qayyim, Ibn al-Ṣalāḥ, al-ʿIrāqī, Ibn Ḥajar, Ibn ʿAbd al-Hādī, and al-Shawkānī.
Vocabulary notes
• layakunanna: a verb in the emphatic form, built on fatḥ because it is joined to the nūn of emphasis.
• aqwām: the plural of qawm, meaning a group of men. Allah says, “Let not a group of men ridicule another group—perhaps they are better than they—and let not women ridicule women—perhaps they are better than they” (Qurʾān 49:11).
