- This hadith establishes a principle for Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah regarding the divine attributes: Allah’s attributes are eternal in kind, yet the individual instances of those attributes occur successively. That is, Allah is everlastingly and perpetually described by His established, active attributes, while their specific manifestations come into being according to His will and wisdom, as He says, “Indeed, your Lord is a consummate doer of whatever He wills” (Hud 11:107). Thus, for example, the attribute of creating is an eternal and everlasting attribute, but His creation of this particular rainfall is a newly originated event.
This differs from the Ashʿarī position, which reinterprets the attribute as mere will. They deny that voluntary actions can subsist in Allah, claiming that a temporal act can exist only in something created, and that Allah is exalted above temporality—He is the First, with nothing before Him. This understanding of the divine attributes is erroneous, for Allah’s attributes are eternal with the eternality of His essence, while what is continually renewed are their individual instances, which occur in accordance with His will and wisdom.
