404 – ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, on the authority of his father, on the authority of his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), said: The Prophet ﷺ declared, “The takbirs in the Eid al-Fiṭr prayer are seven in the first rak‘ah and five in the second, and the recitation comes after both sets.” It was related by Abū Dāwūd, and al-Tirmidhī reports that al-Bukhārī judged it authentic (1).
Hadith grading
The hadith is sound when supported by its corroborating reports.
Al-Hāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar states in al-Talkhīṣ, in summary: It was recorded by Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, and al-Dāraquṭnī through the chain of ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb—from his father—from his grandfather. Aḥmad, ʿAlī ibn al-Madīnī, and al-Bukhārī (as cited by al-Tirmidhī) all declared it authentic. The hadith also has several supporting chains:
- The report narrated by al-Tirmidhī (536), Ibn Mājah (1277), al-Dāraquṭnī (2/46), Ibn ʿAdiyy, and al-Bayhaqī (3/285) through Kathīr ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf al-Muzanī—from his father—from his grandfather; Kathīr, however, is weak.
- The report transmitted by al-Tirmidhī from ʿĀ’ishah; its chain contains Ibn Luhayʿah, whom al-Tirmidhī notes al-Bukhārī considered weak.
- The report related by al-Bazzār from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, which al-Dāraquṭnī ruled mursal.
- The report recorded by al-Bayhaqī (3/289) from Ibn ʿAbbās, which is weak.
Al-ʿUqaylī relays that Aḥmad said, “No sound marfūʿ (traced back to the Prophet) hadith is narrated concerning the takbir in the two Eid prayers.”
Al-Ḥākim said, “The chains to ʿĀ’ishah, Ibn ʿUmar, ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, and Abū…"
