Hadith grading:
This ḥadith is classified as good.
Hadith 401 contains two statements. The first—“The Prophet ﷺ would not pray anything before the ʿEid”—also appears in the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: “The Prophet ﷺ offered no voluntary prayer before the ʿEid nor after it.”
The second statement is: “When he returned to his home he prayed two rakʿahs.”
Ibn Ḥajar says in al-Talkhīṣ that Ibn Mājah narrates it from Abu Saʿīd, and that it is likewise found with al-Ḥākim, who declared its chain sound; al-Dhahabī agreed with him.
Al-Albānī notes that it is only good, because there is some criticism of Ibn ʿAqīl’s accuracy; for that reason Ibn Ḥajar and al-Būṣayrī said: “Its chain is good.”
In the same chapter there is a report from Ibn ʿUmar that says: “He did not pray before it or after it,” which al-Tirmidhī and al-Ḥākim deemed authentic, and al-Dhahabī concurred. It also has supporting evidence from the ḥadith of Ibn ʿAmr, recorded by
