5 – Abu Hurayrah — may Allah be pleased with him — reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “None of you is to bathe in standing water when he is in a state of major ritual impurity.” Recorded by Muslim.
Al-Bukhari’s wording is: “None of you should urinate in stagnant water that does not flow, then bathe in it,” while Muslim adds: “from it.”
Abu Dawud reports: “Nor should he bathe in it to remove major ritual impurity.” (1)
Glossary of the ḥadith
• lā yaghtasil: lā of prohibition; it places the verb in the jussive, requesting the abandonment of the act. “Yaghtasil” is therefore jussive and ends with sukun.
• al-dāʾim: from dāma yadūmu (to remain), meaning water that stays in one place—still, motionless, stagnant.
• thumma yaghtasil: can be read in three ways: (i) jussive, coordinated with “lā yabūlanna”; (ii) accusative with an implied “an”; or (iii) indicative, understood as “then he is to bathe in it.”
• alladhī lā yajri: an explanation of “al-dāʾim,” referring to water that remains in one spot, such as pools in the wilderness.
• lā yabūlanna: lā of prohibition; the verb is built on fatḥ because it is attached to the heavy emphatic nūn, and it is in the jussive position.
