Second: Prayers that are made up at the corresponding time; this is the ʿĪd prayer, according to the authoritative position of the school.
Third: Prayers that are made up by another prayer; Friday prayer falls under this heading, for the noon prayer (ẓuhr) takes its place.
Fourth: Prayers that are not made up at all—those linked to particular causes. When the cause passes, the sunnah itself lapses, such as the two rakʿahs of greeting the mosque (taḥiyyat al-masjid), the eclipse prayer, and the like.
As a rule, the make-up mirrors the original performance, except according to those who hold that whoever misses the witr should make it up as an even number. The Prophet ﷺ would usually perform witr as eleven rakʿahs, and when he overslept he would pray twelve rakʿahs during the day. The same applies to the noon prayer when it is offered in place of Jumuʿah.
