He states in Tanbīh al-Ghāfilīn: “To imagine that this is a meritorious act of devotion ranks among the greatest innovations and the most repugnant sins. Whoever lacks the ability to repudiate such wrongdoing should stay away from any mosque where it is practiced, for increasing the numbers of the innovators is prohibited, and refraining from what is prohibited is obligatory. Allah alone is the One whose help is sought.”
