Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

393 – Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) reports, in a narration traced back to the Prophet ﷺ: “There is no prostration for forgetfulness in the prayer of fear.” Al-Dāraqutni recorded it with a weak chain. (1)

Level of authenticity:
The ḥadīth is weak; both al-Dāraqutni and Ibn Ḥibbān graded it as such.

Points to note:

  1. Standing alone, this report cannot serve as legal evidence, especially since it conflicts with sound narrations that prescribe the prostration of forgetfulness.
  2. Even if, for argument’s sake, it were actionable, the prayer of fear is not performed in the same way as the regular prayer: some of its pillars and conditions are already waived. Foregoing the prostration of forgetfulness would therefore be an even lighter dispensation. In ordinary prayer that prostration compensates for what has been omitted, whereas in the prayer of fear an entire pillar and more may be left out without invalidating it. Allah knows best.
