391 – Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: “The Prophet ﷺ performed the prayer of fear with this group for one rakʿah, and with that group for one rakʿah, and they did not make up anything afterward.” It was narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Ḥibbān declared it authentic (1).
A similar wording is found in Ibn Khuzaymah on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) (2).
Hadith grading:
The hadith is sound. Ibn Ḥibbān authenticated it, and al-Shawkānī said in Nayl al-Awtār: “Abu Dawud, al-Munẓirī, and al-Ḥāfiẓ in al-Talkhīṣ remained silent about it, and its transmitters are those found in the Sahih.” It is further supported by the narration of Ibn ʿAbbās recorded by al-Nasāʾī and the narration of Jābir, also in al-Nasāʾī. These reports show that one permissible form of the prayer of fear is to limit it to a single rakʿah for each contingent.
