Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

as it is known today.

  1. The legitimacy of performing the prayer in the manner set out in the hadith: during this expedition the enemy was not positioned in the direction of the qiblah, so the commander divided the troops into two groups. One group prayed with him while the other shielded the Muslims from a possible attack. He led the first group in prayer; they then completed the remainder on their own, pronounced the taslīm, and went off to stand guard. The second group then came forward, and the imam led them in what was left of the prayer—namely the second rakʿah in a two-rakʿah prayer, the third and fourth rakʿahs in a four-rakʿah prayer, and the third rakʿah in Maghrib. They then completed their prayer while the imam remained seated in the tashahhud, waiting for them; once they had caught up, he ended the prayer with them.
In this arrangement justice is achieved between the two groups: the first caught the opening takbīr with the imam, whereas the second caught the concluding salām.

  2. If the fear prayer in this format is the Fajr prayer, or if the imam is shortening a four-rakʿah prayer, he leads the first group in a single rakʿah and then remains standing during the second rakʿah while they complete the prayer on their own, give salām, and go off to guard. If the prayer is Maghrib or any four-rakʿah prayer being offered in full, he leads the first group in two rakʿahs; they then finish on their own, give salām, and leave to guard.
As for the second group, once the first has taken its post, they come forward and the imam leads them in whatever remains of the prayer. He then sits for the tashahhud while they complete what is due from them until they join him in the sitting; when they have done so, he ends the prayer with them.

  3. It is permissible to pause within the very body of the prayer when a genuine benefit is served.

  4. One must take every precaution against the enemy, as the Exalted says: “Take your precautions” (Q 4:71).

  5. The hardships endured by the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—in supporting Islam, exalting the word of Allah, and striving in His cause had the greatest impact on the spread of Islam and the entry
