3 – Some scholars have suggested that the preacher should carry a sword, as a reminder that Islam was opened to the world by it. Ibn al-Qayyim dismissed this, saying: “After the Prophet ﷺ began using the pulpit, no report has preserved that he ascended it with a sword, a bow, or anything else. Had that been part of the sunnah, he would not have abandoned it once the pulpit was built. Nor is there any narration that he ever carried a sword before the pulpit’s construction; rather, he would lean on a bow or a staff. The belief, held by the uninformed, that he leaned on a sword to signify that the religion stands upon it arises from their sheer ignorance, for the religion was established only by revelation and the Quran.”
