in his commentary on al-ʿUmda (1/67).
- lam yaḥmil (it did not carry): The verb is ḥamalahu yaḥmiluhu—from the pattern of ḍaraba—with the verbal noun ḥaml. The root has several senses; the one intended here is that the water did not accept or absorb the impurity, nor was it overpowered by it.
- al-khabath (filth): khabutha yakhbuthu—from the pattern of karuma—with the verbal nouns khabathan and khabāthah. It is the opposite of ṭāba (to be wholesome). Here, khabath refers to actual ritual impurity.
- lam yanjus (it did not become impure): one says najusa (with kasrah), yanjusu (with fatḥah), najasan (verbal noun), on the pattern of ʿalima; it is also said najasa (with fatḥah), yanjusu (with ḍamma), on the pattern of naṣara.
najāsah: a specific kind of defilement that bars one from performing prayer. - lam: a particle of negation, jussive governance, and tense-shift; it negates the present verb, renders it jussive, and moves its meaning from present or future to the past.
- qillāl Ḥajar (the jars of Ḥajar): Some narrations qualify the jars as those of Ḥajar because those jars had a well-known, standard capacity, like the common sāʿ measures, making them a convenient gauge for water since they were the people’s everyday vessels.
- Ḥajar: a village near Medina. The adjectival nisbah is ḥajariyy by the regular pattern, and hājariyy by an irregular pattern.
Points derived from the ḥadith
- When the water reaches the volume of two qullas, it repels impurity; the impurity dissolves in it and has no effect on it so long as it does not alter the water. This is the explicit purport of the ḥadith.
- Its implicit meaning is that if the water is less than two qullas, the impurity affects it and it becomes impure merely upon contact, whether or not its properties change.
- The operative criterion for impurity is that the water with which the impurity comes into contact is a small amount, i.e., less than two qullas.
Scholarly disagreement
The imams Abū Ḥanīfah, al-Shāfiʿī, Aḥmad, and their adherents maintain that “a small amount” of
