Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

Benefit: When the word Islam appears by itself in the revealed texts, it implicitly includes iman (faith); and when iman is mentioned by itself, it implicitly includes Islam. If, however, the two terms are cited together in the same text, Islam refers to the outward acts, whereas iman denotes the inward acts of the heart—belief in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the divine decree. This is explicitly affirmed in the hadith of ʿUmar, when Gabriel came to teach them their religion.
