374 – Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Prophet ﷺ performed the ʿĪd prayer and then granted a concession for the Friday prayer, saying, ‘Whoever wishes to pray may do so.’” It was narrated by the Five, excluding al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Khuzaymah declared it sound (1).
— Grade of the ḥadīth:
The report is weak in itself but is strengthened by corroborating chains. Al-Shawkānī remarked: “The ḥadīth of Zayd ibn Arqam was recorded by al-Nasāʾī and al-Ḥākim, and was authenticated by Ibn al-Madīnī and Ibn Khuzaymah, although its chain contains Iyās ibn Abī Ramlah, who is an unknown transmitter.”
The editor adds: This ḥadīth has several supporting narrations, among them:
1 – The ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah, recorded by al-Ḥākim (1/425); its chain includes Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd, about whom al-Munḏirī said, “there is some discussion.”
2 – The ḥadīth of Ibn ʿUmar, recorded by Ibn Mājah (1312); its chain is weak.
3 – The ḥadīth of ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī al-Zubayr: “He prayed the ʿĪd prayer on a Friday early in the day, then we went to attend the Friday prayer but he did not come out to us, so we prayed on our own. We mentioned this to Ibn ʿAbbās, and he said, ‘He has followed the Sunnah.’” Reported by Abū Dāwūd (1071).
The editor concludes: With these supporting narrations the ḥadīth becomes strong.
— Vocabulary:
• “Rakhkhasa fī al-jumuʿah” – “he granted a rukhsah (legal concession) concerning the Friday prayer.” Linguistically, rukhsah denotes ease and facilitation; technically, it refers to a ruling established contrary to another sharʿī (legal) proof because of a stronger countervailing consideration.
