– al-Ghāshiyah (the Overwhelming): The verb al-ghashy denotes loss of consciousness—a swoon in which the limbs grow inert, the powers of will and movement are suspended under the shock of a violent blow. Here it refers to Yawm al-Qiyāmah (the Day of Resurrection), whose terrors will so stun people that they lose all awareness and sensation; you will see them as though drunk, yet they will not be drunk—rather, the punishment of Allah is severe.
Lessons drawn from the two ḥadiths
- It is recommended to recite aloud in the Friday prayer, despite it being offered in daylight. Because large numbers gather for it, they ought to hear the Qur’an from one who recites well.
- It is recommended, after the Fātiḥah, to recite Sūrah al-Jumuʿah in the first rakʿah and Sūrah al-Munāfiqūn in the second.
- Ḥadith no. (373) likewise indicates raising the voice in both the Friday and ʿĪd prayers.
- It also points to the recommendation of reciting Sūrah al-Aʿlā in the first rakʿah of the Friday and the two ʿĪd prayers, and Sūrah “Has there come to you the report of the Overwhelming?” in the second rakʿah of each, after the Fātiḥah.
- The reports stating, “He used to recite al-Jumuʿah and al-Munāfiqūn,” and “He used to recite Sabbiḥ and al-Ghāshiyah,” show that the verb kāna (he used to) does not necessarily entail uninterrupted constancy; otherwise the two ḥadiths would be contradictory. Rather, his most frequent practice was to alternate among these four sūrahs—sometimes the first pair, at other times the latter pair.
- The suitability of Sūrah al-Jumuʿah for the Friday prayer is obvious. It urges observance of this great rite, attendance at it, remembrance of Allah therein, and abandonment of whatever worldly business or amusement might distract from it—even if such activity is lawful and beneficial, much less if it is harmful or forbidden. The sūrah also presents the example of one who possesses tomes of beneficial knowledge yet gains nothing from them; his likeness is that of a donkey bearing books, deriving no benefit from what it carries. This parable applies to anyone who comes to the Friday prayer but occupies himself during the sermon with speech or diversions that yield no benefit.
