Glossary of ḥadith terms
• naqīlu: from qaylūlah (also called qāʾilah). The verb qāla (pattern faʿala) refers to the half-day rest. Allah the Exalted says: “The companions of Paradise, that Day, will have a better abode and a fairer place of repose.” (Q 25:24). Ibn Juzayy remarks that the word is a noun of place formed from “sleep at the time of qāʾilah.” Although there is no sleep in Paradise, the verse employs language Arabs associate with relaxation at that hour.
• nataghaddā: with ghayn and an unpointed dāl, from ghadāʾ—the meal eaten early or mid-morning.
