358 – Imrān ibn Ḥuṣayn (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I was suffering from hemorrhoids, so I asked the Prophet ﷺ about the prayer. He replied, ‘Pray standing; if you are unable, then sitting; and if you are still unable, then on your side.’” Reported by al-Bukhārī (1).
Vocabulary of the ḥadith
– Hemorrhoids (bawāsīr): plural of basūr; a swelling at the anus. Physicians describe them as blisters caused by venous enlargement beneath the rectal mucous membrane.
Points derived from the ḥadith
- The report appeared earlier under 263. It clarifies how the sick person is to pray: he prays standing—even if bent over or leaning on a wall, a staff, and the like. If he is unable or finds that too difficult, he prays sitting. The preferred manner of sitting during what would normally be the standing portions is cross-legged, and elsewhere with the left foot tucked under. If he is still unable, or finds that too difficult, he prays lying on his side, ideally on the right side facing the qiblah.
- If he cannot pray on his side, he indicates the movements with his head, lowering the indication for prostration further than that for bowing.
- The ḥadith is supported by noble Qur’anic verses that express the spirit of ease in the Islamic law, such as: “Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity” (2:286) and “He has not placed upon you in the religion any hardship” (22:78).
Al-Nawawī said: The ummah is unanimously agreed that anyone who is unable to stand in an obligatory prayer prays it sitting; he is not required to repeat it, and his reward is not diminished—on the strength of this report.

* مفردات الحديث:
