Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

with the imam.
• fātakum (what you missed): al-fawāt is the verbal noun of fāta–yafūtu (to elude), and it denotes something that has gone ahead and cannot be overtaken.
• fa-atimmū (then complete): finish whatever part of the prayer you missed in light of what you managed to perform.

Points derived from the ḥadith

  1. Performing the obligatory prayer in congregation is mandatory; numerous narrations establish this ruling.
  2. It is recommended to come to the prayer in a state of tranquility and dignified composure, for such comportment befits this noble act of worship, suits the posture of one about to converse privately with Allah the Exalted, and accords with entering one of Allah’s houses—buildings He has honored, elevated, purified, and made a place of return for His righteous servants. Moreover, the one on his way to prayer is considered to be “in prayer,” so his demeanor beforehand should mirror his demeanor inside it—humility, submissiveness, and serenity.
  3. The well-known position in the school of Imām Aḥmad is that a person has caught the congregation if he utters the opening takbīr (takbīrat al-iḥrām) before the imam’s first salām. Al-Majd related that the scholars unanimously agree on this.
  4. If a late-comer (masbūq) joins the imam while he is bowing, he has attained the rakʿah, and the imam’s preceding him in the recitation does not harm him. Abū Dāwūd reports that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Whoever catches the bowing has caught the rakʿah.” The Shaykh and others relayed this as the consensus of the scholars, and it has been the practice of the ummah from the Companions and Followers, with no contrary position known from the early generations. The authentic ḥadith of Abū Bakrah likewise supports this, for the Prophet ﷺ did not command him to repeat the prayer.
  5. The phrase “When you hear the iqāmah” shows that the iqāmah is prescribed; it is a communal obligation like the adhān and is the right of the one who gave the call. At-Tirmidhī (199) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever gives the adhān should also make the iqāmah.”
  6. The words “when you hear” imply that the iqāmah should be made audible to those inside the mosque so they may stand for prayer—especially in a spacious mosque—and to those outside so that they may walk
