Tawḍīḥ al-AḥkāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

, even if he performed it in an unsound manner. This is also corroborated by what Abu Dawud narrates—traced back to Abu Hurayrah—“Whoever catches a rakʿah has caught the prayer.” Shaykh Ḥamad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said: “If the follower reaches the imam while he is bowing and joins him, he has caught that rakʿah.” This is what has been transmitted from the early generations and is the position of the overwhelming majority of the ummah—Companions, Successors, the four imams, and their adherents. No contrary view is known from the Salaf. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) even cited consensus on the matter.

4 – The Prophet ﷺ forbade Abu Bakrah from running because it conflicts with composure and dignity, echoing what is recorded by al-Bukhari (636) and Muslim (602): “When you hear the iqamah, walk to the prayer with calmness and dignity; pray what you catch and make up what you miss.” Ibn al-Qayyim states in Badāʾiʿ al-Fawāʾid that the Prophet’s words to Abu Bakrah, “Do not run,” are a prohibition against excessive haste.

5 – It is recommended for anyone coming to the prayer to approach with calmness and dignity; that is its proper etiquette. He should pray what he catches, make up what he has missed, and comply with the Prophet’s prohibition, for the ruling is general. Al-Bayhaqi relates in his Sunan (2/90) that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not come to the prayer running.”

6 – This narration highlights the great merit of Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him): the Prophet’s approval of him, his supplication for him, and his affirmation that what he did sprang from eagerness for worship and obedience to Allah.

7 – The hadith also establishes the requirement of standing in line during congregational prayer. Whoever prays behind the row on his own without an excuse, his prayer is invalid, as in the hadith, “There is no prayer for one who prays alone behind the row” (Abu Dawud 682). Abu Bakrah therefore entered the row while still in bowing, and the Prophet ﷺ endorsed his action; the details of this issue will be discussed later.

8 – It is recommended to join the imam in whatever position you find him.
